  10.                         USAGE POLICY and CREDIT CARDS
  11.  
  12.      In addition to site licenses, there is now an optional individual user 
  13. registration (including an update disk and support) for $30.  Credit cards may 
  14. be used to charge registration and site license fees, through the Public 
  15. Software Library.  See VDE.DOC.

  17.                           FOREIGN LANGUAGE VERSIONS
  18.  
  19.      Several foreign versions of VDE are under development; one, Finnish, is 
  20. now available, with full documentation.  Please write if you need a specific 
  21. foreign version, or are interested in collaborating to produce one.
  22.  
  23.                           GENERIC (ANSI.SYS) SUPPORT
  24.  
  25.      If you are using the Generic installation option, please let me know.  It 
  26. may disappear from future versions if no longer needed.  Suggestions for 
  27. future improvements are always welcome as well.

  31.      The following is a quick guide, for users of previous versions of VDE, to 
  32. noticable changes in operation.  Please check VDE.REF and VINST.REF for full 
  33. details.
  34.  
  35.                                   VDE 1.64C
  36.  
  37.      Version 1.64C is a minor revision; VDE.COM has internal improvements 
  38. only.  VINST.COM has one additional feature: the ability to accept and display 
  39. PC keystrokes like [PgUp] in macro key definitions, which is now documented in 
  40. VINST.REF.
  41.  
  42.  
  43.                                NEW IN VDE 1.64
  44.  
  45.      * The "place mark" commands have been revised to remove confusion between 
  46. them and the ^Z character (1Ah).  ^KM (not ^PZ) now sets a place mark.  ^QM 
  47. (not ^QZ) goes to a place mark.  The mark displays as a hilighted "!".  ^PZ 
  48. now inserts an actual ^Z, as you would expect.
  49.  
  50.      * The definition of "ASCII document" has been corrected.  Filemode /A is 
  51. now truly ASCII text, and therefore will NOT interpret control codes as 
  52. printer commands, allowing them to display and print directly.  A new filemode 
  53. /D (Document) is now the default; it DOES interpret control codes (as /A used 
  54. to do).  This is the only present difference between modes /D and /A.
  55.  
  56.      * There is a new find/replace option "W" for "whole word only".
  57.  
  58.      * Different .VDI (installation) files can now be loaded with the AltU 
  59. command, or with a semicolon on the command line.  This allows you to change 
  60. screen colors, user options, etc. without multiple copies of VDE.COM.
  61.  
  62.      * Block write (^KW) now offers a choice of Overwrite or Append if the 
  63. named file already exists.  Press Esc, ^U, or Space to cancel.
  64.  
  65.      * The Esc* command has a new toggle "X,x" to control margin release.
  66.  
  67.      * Print toggles/switches (^PS, etc) always insert in document modes, 
  68. rather than overstriking, regardless of INSERT status.
  69.  
  70.      * Prompt input now uses ^Y (not ^X) to erase the entire entry.
  71.  
  72.      * The ^QT command will report "not found" if the given character doesn't 
  73. occur, rather than deleting to the end of the file as before -- unless it is 
  74. ^Z.  ^QT^Z will still delete to the end.
  75.  
  76.      * In the file browser, pressing [Esc] returns you to the ">dir" prompt, 
  77. where another directory or filespec may be given; press [Esc] again to exit.
  78.  
  79.      * VDE is now DESQview aware.  It will multitask more efficiently, and no 
  80. longer needs special installation to handle direct screen writes.  In your DV 
  81. setup, set "Writes directly to screen" and "Virtualize" to NO.  The AltE/AltA 
  82. commands will not work; use DV's own "Rearrange:Video" menu selection.
  83.  
  84.      * Backup (.BAK) files are handled more like they were before 1.63: every 
  85. MANUAL save (^KS,^KX etc) once again updates the BAK file.  Autosave does not.
  86.  
  87.                                     VINST
  88.  
  89.      * The printer driver "Reserve header space?" option has been replaced 
  90. (and thus there is no longer an "R" option in the Print command ^KP).  Instead 
  91. there are two new driver settings, "Top margin if header used" and "Lines 
  92. between header and text", which in combination offer more flexibility.
  93.      Also, modifying the driver's printer control codes has been simplified: 
  94. you choose the codes you want to change from a menu, and longer code sequences 
  95. (needed by some printers, especially LaserJets) are now allowed.
  96.      VINST can still read and convert your earlier version .VDP files.
  97.  
  98.      * There is a new User Option to select a default right justification 
  99. setting for documents (on or off).
  100.  
  101.      * There is a new (separate) screen color for error messages.
  102.  
  103.      * The Generic installation now asks whether it will be running on an IBM 
  104. PC.  Answer Yes to allow display of PC graphics characters.
  105.  
  106.      * Screen colors for the HP95LX are still distinct from the IBMPC colors, 
  107. but are now also user-changeable.  To change them you must run VINST on the 
  108. 95LX (still selecting the "IBMPC" option).
  109.  
  110.      * There is a new 132-column installation option "T" for Trident SVGA.
  111.

  114.                     VDE 1.63 UPDATE SUMMARY (05 Jun 1992)
  115.  
  116.      * There is a new command ^\.  Like ^L, it repeats the last find/replace, 
  117. but in the opposite direction.
  118.      * Whatever macro you have assigned to the key Esc0 will now run 
  119. automatically whenever you first enter VDE.  See AUTOEXEC MACRO.
  120.      * A pair of new macro test commands, Esc< and Esc>, allow comparison of 
  121. characters by ASCII values.
  122.      * New synonyms for commands formerly unusable in macros or Generic 
  123. Terminal mode: ^O= for [5], ^Q- for Shift[Tab], Esc^R/^C for ^[PgUp/Dn].
  124.      * When an error message displays, it is no longer necessary to press 
  125. [Esc]; it will disappear after 1.5 seconds, or upon your next keystroke.
  126.      * Block commands (except ^KV,^KPB) will now work if the block is only 
  127. half marked; they will mark the cursor position as the other end of the block 
  128. first, then execute.
  129.      * The help menu (^J) now has a new page (press "F") listing all the file 
  130. modes.  A new mode /F is for WordPerfect 5.x (/P remains for 4.x).  The mode 
  131. for WordStar 5.x is now /S (not /5) to avoid confusion.
  132.      * The variable tab set and clear commands (^OI,^ON) both now accept a 
  133. simple list "n1,n2..." of columns to add or clear several tabs.   To clear all 
  134. tabs, type ^ON* (not, as before, ^OI# or ^OI@).
  135.      * A new option, "M"=multi-file, has been added to the find/replace 
  136. commands (^QF/^QA), to allow these functions to run in sequence through every 
  137. file currently being edited.
  138.      * There is a new Print option "R" to reverse the "Reserve header space" 
  139. choice in the printer driver.  Printing can now be paused by pressing any key 
  140. other than [Esc].
  141.      * It is no longer necessary to type "SHELL" to enter a DOS shell via the 
  142. AltR command; simply hit [Enter].  ([Esc] or ^U cancel.)
  143.      * The File Browser's (^KF) behavior and command keys have been revised in 
  144. several respects.  See FILES for details.
  145.      * The graphics function (AltG) has a new command "-", which clears all 
  146. graphics definitions not currently in use; and "=" will redefine a previously 
  147. defined graphic, if it is not in use.
  148.      * In document modes, print codes are now ignored when counting columns.  
  149. This affects tabs, vertical cursor movements, and column number display.
  150.      * The HP95LX palmtop no longer requires special installation; VDE detects 
  151. it automatically.  Performance on the HP95LX has been improved.  The [MENU] 
  152. key now calls up the MenuBar.  The serial port is powered on/off for printing.

  156.                     VDE 1.62 UPDATE SUMMARY (27 Oct 1991)
  157.  
  158.      *  ^KE (rename) will now accept a directory name alone, to move your work 
  159. into another directory under the same filename.
  160.      *  ^K# (auto number) now uses the simple character "#" as a number 
  161. marker; the previous command ^P# has been removed.  (You can convert files 
  162. containing old-style markers by replacing (^QA) the old code, which can be 
  163. entered as ^PF, with "#".)
  164.      *  AltS (split file) usage has been simplified: you supply only the input 
  165. file name.  VDE constructs the output name by adding numbers to the end of the 
  166. file name (so TEST.FIL produces TEST1.FIL, etc).
  167.      *  There is a new function, delete word left, given by ^[BkSp], though 
  168. this can be changed to delete character left (as before) with VINST.
  169.      *  ^[Ins] now functions as a Word Insert toggle, the same as ^].
  170.      *  The [Home/End] keys, when used repeatedly, will keep on moving to the 
  171. beginning of the previous line or the end of the next one.
  172.      *  VDE now runs in 40-column mode, on portable computers with small 
  173. screens or on any CGA/EGA/VGA system using the MODE CO40 command.  Some menus 
  174. remain 80 columns wide and can be scrolled by pressing the arrow keys.
  175.      *  AltA and AltE now fully support the changing of screen sizes under 
  176. UltraVision.  See SCREEN SIZE.
  177.  
  178.                                     VINST
  179.  
  180.      *  The video card installation now supports "Standard" SVGA -- including 
  181. any VGA board (like Boca) using video modes 23h and 22h for 132 columns.
  182.      *  One new IBM PC Installation option fixes conflicts between VDE and 
  183. some other software over the use of the Print Screen key; another allows the 
  184. use of the Tandy 1000 keyboard.
  185.      *  Entry of hex strings in VINST for the printer driver has been 
  186. simplified; instead of the (#),bytes format used previously, simply enter the 
  187. desired bytes.  To enter a null string (00), type ^J or ^[Ret].
  188.      *  There is now an installation for the HP 95LX palmtop computer.
  189.      *  There is now an installation for the Otrona 8:16 with IBM video 
  190. emulation, allowing faster screen updating.
  191.      *  The Generic Terminal installation now allows choice of screen colors.

  195.                     VDE 1.61 UPDATE SUMMARY (27 Mar 1991)
  196.  
  197.      *  The Print command (^KP) now offers a new option "A" for convenient 
  198. addressing of envelopes while writing correspondence, by simply marking off 
  199. the address as a block and inserting an envelope in your printer.
  200.      *  The AltE command now offers a wider choice of screen sizes, from 17 to 
  201. 57 lines.  Screen sizes other than 25 and 43/50 lines require the new 
  202. companion file VDEOPT.DAT.
  203.      *  Blocks can now be marked by holding down the Shift key while moving 
  204. the cursor with the PC keypad keys (arrows, [Home, End, PgUp/Dn]).
  205.      *  There is a new file mode /C, for programming in "C" and other 
  206. structured languages: nondocument, but with autoindent and variable tabs.
  207.      *  Accessory files (including VDEOPT.DAT and all ".VDx" files) may now be 
  208. kept in a designated "VDE directory", using the SET VDE= command.

  210.                                     VINST
  211.  
  212.      *  Under "Installation": for IBM PCs, you can specify a default screen 
  213. size for editing with VDE.  For the generic ANSI installation, you can select 
  214. support for the special keyboards of DEC Rainbow computers or VT terminals.
  215.      *  There is a new user option to determine whether the new page is 
  216. positioned at the top of the screen after use of the ^QI,^QN,^QL commands.
  217.      *  Several improvements have been made regarding data files:
  218.        VINST now creates ".VDI" files for storing installation, options, and 
  219.   menubar information -- useful when updating to a new version of VDE.
  220.        VINST now creates ".VDC" files for storing character width data.  
  221.   These, and the ".VDG" files for graphics, can now also be accessed from VDE 
  222.   using the AltU command or command-line semicolon syntax.
  223.        Since printer drivers have changed several times recently, VINST can 
  224.   read .VDP files from versions 1.52 through 1.6 as well.  (VDE cannot, so 
  225.   write them back to disk with VINST before trying to use them with VDE.)

  229.                      VDE 1.6 UPDATE SUMMARY (12 Dec 1990)
  230.  
  231.      *  A new "Auto Format" mode (command ^OM or {Text:auto fmT}) provides 
  232. continuous reformatting of text during typing or editing.
  233.      *  A new "Right Justify" mode (command ^OJ or {Text:Justify}) inserts 
  234. spaces in text as necessary so that formatting leaves an even right margin.
  235.      *  A new paragraph tab command (^OG) allows setting a temporary indent.
  236.      *  Undelete (^U) can now be used repeatedly to recover prior deletions.
  237.      *  MenuBar mode now allows VDE control-commands as well.  (A new choice 
  238. {Misc:Escape} can access Esc commands.)  Also, a new {User:} menu bar can 
  239. contain five new commands of your choice.
  240.      *  The preview command (^OD) now shows page numbers, and indicates page 
  241. breaks with dotted lines on screen.
  242.      *  VDE now uses conditional or "soft" hyphens, entered with ^P-.
  243.      *  There is a new file mode /U ("U"nformatted), which produces files 
  244. without soft carriage returns.
  245.      *  Two new macro commands have been added:
  246.        Esc* is a "universal toggle set", allowing a macro to specify any status 
  247.   for Insert, Justify, and other toggles.
  248.        Esc$ allows macro execution to continue when an error occurs.
  249.      *  The print command (^KP) now allows headers on the left side of the 
  250. page, using the "<" character.
  251.      *  The Match file function (AltM) now compares word by word, ignoring 
  252. formatting differences in documents (line length, word spacing, etc).  In /N 
  253. mode, it is still an exact character by character match.

  257.      *  A new main menu item "menu<B>ar mode" lets you customize the new 
  258. "User" menu bar to contain 5 commands of your choice.  (The choice for MenuBar 
  259. vs Command mode has also been moved here from the options section.)
  260.      *  New user options allow for a choice of default status for auto format, 
  261. double spacing, and proportional spacing.
  262.      *  For convenience, graphic character sets (for the AltG command) can 
  263. also now be stored and retrieved as disk files (.VDG).
  264.      *  The video card choices now include Paradise VGA+.
  265.      *  The printer installation now allows you to specify different ports 
  266. (e.g., LPT2) on systems with several printers.
  267.      *  Printer code entry now allows entering a single quote (`) + character
